Your wedding music doesn't have to sound like everyone else's.
We love beautiful classical wedding music. But we also love Star Wars.
And Harry Potter. And Aladdin. And The Princess Bride. And Lord of the Rings. And movie scores, Broadway shows, video games, and all of those pieces of music that immediately take you somewhere the second you hear the first few notes.
Your wedding should feel like the two of you, and the music is one of the easiest ways to make that happen.
The Left Coast Quintet performs on flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, which gives us a wonderfully orchestral sound for music that originally came from the movies, stage, television, and games. Some of our favorite weddings have mixed traditional ceremony music with completely unexpected selections that meant something special to the couple.
So yes, you can absolutely have nerdy wedding music.
And it can sound amazing.
The instruments may be classical. The playlist doesn't have to be.
Walk Down the Aisle to Something You Actually Love
There is no rule that says a wedding party has to enter to Pachelbel's Canon.
If the music from How to Train Your Dragon gives you goosebumps, let's talk about it.
If you've always imagined walking down the aisle to music from The Princess Bride, we understand completely.
If the two of you have spent hundreds of hours exploring Hyrule together, grew up watching Lady and the Tramp or the Sword in the Stone, bonded over James Bond, or can quote Lord of the Rings to each other endlessly, why shouldn't some of that make its way into your wedding?
The trick is choosing music that works for the moment.
Some soundtrack pieces are incredibly romantic. Others are majestic and ceremonial. Some make fantastic recessional music. And then there are pieces that might be a little ridiculous for the ceremony but are absolutely perfect once cocktail hour begins.
We can help you figure out which is which.
When even the cake topper understands the assignment. Bonus points for Batman.
Star Wars Wedding Music
Few film scores work better for a wind ensemble than the music of Star Wars.
John Williams wrote music that is romantic, heroic, dramatic, playful, and instantly recognizable. That gives us plenty to work with throughout a wedding.
A beautiful theme can accompany a processional, while something bigger and more celebratory can send everyone back up the aisle after the ceremony. And once cocktail hour starts, we can have a little more fun. Yes, that includes the Cantina Band.
The Princess Bride Wedding Music
If there were ever a movie made for couples who are romantic and just a little nerdy, this might be it.
The Princess Bride has adventure, comedy, sword fights, true love, and one of the most recognizable romantic themes in film.
Music from the movie can be a beautiful choice for a wedding ceremony without feeling like a gimmick. Guests who know the movie will immediately understand the reference, while everyone else simply hears a gorgeous piece of music.
As you wish.
This is the goal: beautiful ceremony, beautiful setting, and music that actually sounds like you.
Disney & Pixar Wedding Music
Disney music gives couples an enormous range of possibilities, and you definitely don't have to be planning a Disney-themed wedding to include a favorite song or two.
There are sweeping love themes, quiet instrumental melodies, adventurous scores, nostalgic childhood favorites, and plenty of upbeat music for a recessional or cocktail hour. Think Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Lion King, Tangled, or Frozen, along with Pixar favorites like Up, Toy Story, Coco, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles.
Some selections are immediately recognizable. Others are subtle enough that your guests may spend a few seconds thinking, "Wait...I know this." Those are some of our favorite reactions.
And there are so many different ways to use this music. A beautiful Disney love song can work surprisingly well for a processional, while something from Up or Ratatouille can add a sweet and playful touch to the prelude. Once the ceremony is over, The Incredibles, Toy Story, The Lion King, and other upbeat favorites are right at home during cocktail hour.
From the classic animated films many of us grew up with to Pixar and newer Disney favorites, there are countless ways to work a little Disney magic into your wedding while still keeping the ceremony elegant, personal, and completely your own. And now we can throw in the Marvel themes and this section just got a whole lot longer....
Fantasy, Adventure & Movie Soundtracks
Maybe your fandom doesn't fit neatly into one category.
Perfect.
Movie and television scores contain some of the best instrumental music ever written, and a wind quintet is especially well suited to performing it.
Jurassic Park, Braveheart, Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones, and countless other films and shows have music that can work beautifully at weddings.
Some pieces feel romantic. Some feel epic.
And sometimes you just want your guests to realize that the musicians playing during cocktail hour have suddenly launched into something completely unexpected. We fully support this.
Just your friendly neighborhood bassoonist, apparently auditioning for the giraffe section.
Video Game Wedding Music
Video game music has become some of the most beautiful and sophisticated orchestral music being written today, and for a lot of couples, these melodies carry just as much meaning as music from a favorite movie.
Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy, and other games contain everything from quiet melodies to huge adventure themes.
The right arrangement can turn a favorite piece of game music into something elegant enough for a wedding ceremony while still giving your fellow gamers that moment of recognition.
And cocktail hour gives us even more room to have fun.
Five musicians, five very different instruments, and a whole lot more possibilities than Pachelbel's Canon.
You Don't Have to Choose Between "Elegant" and "Fun"
This is probably the biggest misconception about nontraditional wedding music.
Choosing music from Star Wars doesn't mean you have to have a Star Wars wedding.
You can have an elegant ceremony overlooking the Pacific, surrounded by flowers, with everyone dressed beautifully...and walk down the aisle to a piece of music from a movie you have loved since you were twelve.
In fact, that's often what makes the moment memorable.
We regularly mix classical music, jazz, Broadway, pop arrangements, movie scores, and other favorites within the same wedding. Your prelude might begin with Bach and Debussy and eventually wander into Disney or a film score. Your ceremony can be romantic and meaningful. Then cocktail hour can loosen up completely. There really aren't many rules.
Proof that a wind quintet is perfectly comfortable when the lights turn purple and things get a little less classical.
Where Does Fandom Music Work Best?
Prelude This is a great place for subtle references. Guests are arriving and listening, but the music doesn't have to accompany a specific ceremonial moment.
Wedding Party Processional Something warm, romantic, or cinematic can work beautifully here and establish the personality of the ceremony before the main entrance.
Bride or Groom Processional This is the big one. If there's a piece of music that really means something to you, we can talk about whether it will translate well to this moment.
Recessional Have fun. Seriously. You're married. Everyone is cheering. This is a great place for something joyful, triumphant, unexpected, or slightly ridiculous.
Cocktail Hour This is where we can really nerd out.
Movie themes, Broadway, jazz, pop, video games, television music and other recognizable favorites can all get mixed together while your guests grab a drink and start trying to identify what we're playing.
Have Something Specific in Mind?
Our music library has grown enormously over the years, and we're constantly adding new arrangements.
If you have a favorite movie, game, show, musical, or piece of music that has become part of your relationship, tell us about it. We may already have it.
And if we don't, depending on the piece and the amount of time before your wedding, we can talk about whether a custom arrangement might be possible.
The best wedding playlists aren't necessarily the ones filled with the most traditional wedding music.
They're the ones where your guests hear something and immediately think:
"Of course they picked this."
Let's Build a Wedding Soundtrack That's Actually Yours
Left Coast Quintet performs weddings throughout San Diego and Southern California with flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon.
Whether you're planning a completely traditional ceremony with one wonderfully nerdy surprise or you're ready to fill cocktail hour with movie scores, Disney, Broadway, and video game music, we'd love to hear what you're thinking.
Tell us what you love, what you're planning, and what you want your wedding to feel like.
